The My Little Pony brand describes its characters as ponies. The brand's toys, as the name suggests, usually consist of small colorful plastic ponies. The characters on the various My Little Pony television shows and movies are depicted with varying degrees of fantasy elements, like the ability to speak, fly, and use magic.

The show My Little Pony Friendship is Magic places the ponies in the "magical land of Equestria". In the Equestria Girls franchise, ponies played a minor role since it's a spin-off where it focus on their human counterparts, but the toy franchise still featured ponies as a reference to the original series.

Three types of ponies

In the show, My Little Pony Friendship is Magic divides ponies into three main "types" in the first episode: Earth ponies, Pegasi, and unicorns. Previous My Little Pony generations included flutter ponies and breezies as well as sea ponies. Most, however, are absent from the Friendship is Magic series. But the powers of the Alicorns draws equally from these three types:

Earth ponies

File:Applejack -not a real word- EG.png

Applejack and Pinkie Pie, two earth ponies, in My Little Pony Equestria Girls.

Earth ponies have no wings or unicorn horn, and therefore most closely resemble real ponies. They are the kind first introduced by the My Little Pony brand. The main cast of the show My Little Pony Equestria Girls franchise features two girls that have an Earth pony counterpart: Applejack and Pinkie Pie. Also in the franchise, when a girl has an Earth pony counterpart while transforming to her anthro form, she would simply have pony ears and longer hair to resemble a tail.

Pegasi

Derpy flying past the camera EG2

Derpy, a Pegasus pony, in My Little Pony Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks.

Pegasi, or "Pegasus ponies", are ponies with wings and flight abilities – in the fashion of the legendary Pegasus. When referring to a single pony, "Pegasus" is almost always used. Pegasi can usually fly and interact with clouds. The main cast of the franchise features two girls with a Pegasi counterpart: Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy. Also what makes it unique in the franchise, is that whenever a girl has a Pegasus counterpart while transforming into her anthro form, she would also sprout pegasus wings on her back while sprouting pony ears and longer hair.

Unicorns

Sunset Shimmer, as a unicorn pony, in My Little Pony Equestria Girls.

Unicorns feature a magical horn on their foreheads, and usually have magical abilities. They are always called "unicorns" in the show, but the wiki also uses the term "unicorn ponies" for consistency with "Pegasus ponies" and "Earth ponies", since unicorns are also a type of pony. The franchise's main cast initially features two girls with unicorn counterpart: Rarity and Sunset Shimmer. Also in the franchise, the transformation of a girl with a unicorn counterpart is the exactly the same like the anthro forms of the Earth pony. (However in the chapter book My Little Pony Equestria Girls: Through the Mirror, Rarity sprout a unicorn horn on her forehead, unlike the movie version).

Other types of ponies

Alicorns

Princess Luna and Princess Cadance EG

Princess Luna and her niece, Princess Cadance, two alicorn ponies, in My Little Pony Equestria Girls.

Alicorns are ponies that despite having both a unicorn horn and wings. Alicorns are often classify as royalty in Equestria since they're one of the powerful types of ponies in the land. Princess Twilight Sparkle was ordinarily a unicorn before she gains wings and becomes a princess. In the Equestria Girls franchise, the transformation of a girl with an alicorn counterpart is exactly the same like the anthro forms of the pegasus. (However, human Twilight Sparkle and Sunset Shimmer gained a horn on their forehead while transforming in My Little Pony Equestria Girls: Friendship Games; as mentioned above, Sunset Shimmer is actually a unicorn pony, but she gain wings three times on several occasions).

Crystal Ponies

Princesses in a hall EG

The Crystal Empire guards (they're Crystal ponies).

Crystal ponies are a rare type of ponies that only resides in the Crystal Empire. Crystal Ponies appear more "faceted" and "glittery" through a magic that links them with a magical artifact called the Crystal Heart.

Other equines

There're oher kinds of equines and equine-like creatures that are featured in the series.

Zebras

There's a Toys "R" Us exclusive doll that features Zecora, whose Equestrian counterpart is a zebra.

Donkey

Cranky Doodle has an Equestrian counterpart, whose is a donkey.
