The My Little Pony brand describes its characters as ponies. The brand's toys, as the name suggests, usually consist of small colorful plastic ponies. The characters on the various My Little Pony television shows and movies are depicted with varying degrees of fantasy elements, like the ability to speak, fly, and use magic.

The show Friendship is Magic places the ponies in the "magical land of Equestria". In the Equestria Girls franchise, ponies played a minor role since it's a spin-off where it focus on their human counterparts, but the toy franchise still featured ponies as a reference to the original series.

Types of ponies

In the show, Friendship is Magic divides ponies into three main "types" in the first episode: Earth ponies, Pegasi, and unicorns. Previous My Little Pony generations included flutter ponies and breezies as well as sea ponies. Most, however, are absent from the Friendship is Magic series. But the powers of the Alicorns draws equally from these five (and three main) types:

Earth ponies

Earth ponies have no wings or unicorn horn, and therefore most closely resemble real ponies. They are the kind first introduced by the My Little Pony brand. Also in the franchise, when a character has an Earth counterpart while transforming to her anthro form, she would simply have pony ears and hair extensions to resemble a tail.

Pegasi

Pegasi, or "Pegasus ponies", are ponies with wings and flight abilities – in the fashion of the legendary Pegasus. When referring to a single pony, "Pegasus" is almost always used. Pegasi can usually fly and interact with clouds. Also what makes it unique in the franchise, is that whenever a character has a Pegasus counterpart while transforming into an anthro form, it would also sprout Pegasus wings on her back while sprouting pony ears and hair extensions.

Unicorns

Unicorns feature a magical horn on their foreheads, and usually have magical abilities. They are always called "unicorns" in the show, but this site also uses the term "unicorn ponies" for consistency with "Pegasus ponies" and "Earth ponies", since unicorns are also a type of pony. Also in the franchise, the transformation of a character with this counterpart is the exactly the same like the anthro forms of the Earth. However in the chapter book My Little Pony Equestria Girls: Through the Mirror, Rarity sprouts a unicorn horn on her forehead, unlike the movie version.

Alicorns

Alicorns are ponies that despite having both a unicorn horn and wings. Alicorns are often classify as royalty in Equestria since they're one of the powerful types of ponies in the land. Princess Twilight Sparkle was ordinarily a unicorn before she gains wings and becomes a princess.

Despite being a unicorn, Sunset Shimmer was shown gaining wings when she ponied up in the Rainhow Rocks novelation. Also in the Friendship Games, she also gained horn and wings during her transformation, alongside the human Twilight Sparkle's alter-ego, Midnight Sparkle.

Crystal Ponies

Crystal ponies are a rare type of ponies that only resides in the Crystal Empire. Crystal Ponies appear more "faceted" and "glittery" through a magic that links them with a magical artifact called the Crystal Heart.
